Kaiwara and Kailasagiri Cave Temples

Bangalore to Kaiwara

For those who are planning for a day’s trip from Bengaluru, Kaiwara is one of the best places. This little town is about 65 kms from Bangalore. We took less than two hours to reach this place.

Kaiwara is famous for Saint Narayanappa, popularly known as Kaiwara Narayana Thatha or Thathayya who lived in the 18th century.

The Amara Narayana Swamy temple is the first point of interest in Kaiwara. We reached the temple by 2 pm.

There was thirty minutes more for the temple to open, the bangle seller at the temple premises suggested that we visit Sri Yogi Narayana Mutt and later return to the temple when it opens at 2.30 pm.

Free Lunch

Sri Yogi Narayana Mutt was close by to the temple. As we walked in to the mutt, somebody directed us to the dining hall where the free lunch was in offer.

We were so hungry that we decided to visit the mutt after the lunch. The unlimited lunch consisted of white rice, sambar, buttermilk and a vegetable side dish.

Empty the plate

Free lunch is good but what if you are compelled to eat even the last piece of vegetable? That becomes a big project when you are with the children.

We did manage to empty our plate and our children’s plates as well. We ensured that nothing left on the plate and made the staffs happy!

Yoginarayana Mutt (Thatayya Samadhi)

The beautiful white building is the Sri Yoginarayana Mutt. The mutt is where the Saint Narayanappa Samadhi (grave) is. The saint, also known as Thatayya, attained jeevasamadhi here.

After spending sometime in the mutt, we headed to the Amara Narayana Swamy temple. Being Sunday, we expected huge crowd in the temple but it was not the case.

Drive to Kailasagiri Cave Temple

Kailasagiri

The Kailasagiri cave temple is about seven kilometres from Kaiwara. The drive to this temple was one of the memorable one. The last few kilometres was a thrilling experience.

If you are driving, check out for sudden curves (very steep) and unexpected traffic at the same time. Bikers will surely enjoy this route. I am planning to come here again in my Bullet 350 ES.

We had to climb the hill for a little distance from the parking area. The pathway and view of the hill was so impressive that I slowed down walking just to enjoy the view.

“This is the best place for photo shoot”

The cave temples were another surprise. The brand new looking temple is one of the best. The cave temple consisted of perfectly carved statues and wall arts.
I suppose many are not aware about this location.

Monkey Population

The monkey population is in abundance here. Watch your steps while you climb the hill. Your fellow walker can be a monkey too!

Make sure you visit this place in a group. This place may not be the safest beyond the actual route. (A notice board states this)

At the foothill, there is a small shop and a dining hall. While the shop sells eatables and liquids, one can have free lunch in the dining hall. (Not sure about the timings).

If you are planning to take home some souvenirs, check out some at Kaiwara town.
